FAQ *

  • 16-tile Taiwanese mahjong based on LA Mahjong League’s House Rules. It is in your best interest to learn and understand our house rules ahead of time so that you can strategize effectively.

    LAMJ team members will be on hand to confirm that points are counted correctly upon request. 

  • ✓ 8 Events to Rack Up Points from Sep 21 - Dec 14

    ✓ 2 table levels: Tortoise and Hare (more info below)

    ✓ Top 4 players win prizes (more info below)

    ✓ $100 entry fee; members still have to sign up for each individual event

    ✓ Food and drink minimums apply at each venue

    Note: In the event that we don’t fill all 4 seats at a table, LAMJ team members will sit in. Their points won’t count — yours will.

  • Yes, the league fee is $100 per person. It covers:

    • event fees for 8 Season 2 events taking place from September-early December 

    • prizes  (we pay for all of the gift cards to aapi-owned businesses)

  • Your event ticket goes to the venue and covers your first drink. 

    We invite you to order additional drinks (and food!) to show our venues some love!

    Tournaments typically take place from 5-9pm (3 hours of gameplay); time may vary but will be clearly communicated on the event registration page. 


    When you sign up for a spot, please ARRIVE ON TIME to ensure 3 hours of gameplay for everyone.

    • Event sign-ups will be available one week prior to each event date via a dedicated league page; we will announce when seats are dropping via IG. 

    • Seats are available on a first come, first served basis. 

    • When you sign up for a spot, you can select your level: Tortoise or Hare

    • Although we plan to have 50 league participants, not all of the events will be able to accommodate 50 players. 

    PLEASE ARRIVE ON TIME to ensure 3 hours of gameplay for everyone!

  • We want you to be able to play with others at your speed: 

    Tortoise (龜): although technically untimed, we ask that you try to make moves within 30 seconds. 

    Hare (兔): you must be able to make moves within 10 seconds. 

    • If you’re not able to meet this requirement and your tablemates ask for an official timer, you will be penalized 1 point every time you exceed 10 seconds. 

    • For future events, you will be paired with tortoises.

    • Members will be separated into two pools based on the level they registered for: Tortoise or Hare.

    • Upon arrival and check-in, each member will be randomly assigned a table. 

    • There will be two rounds with a table swap in the middle.

  • As this is a tournament, no assistance may be requested or provided. 

    Accordingly, if you make a mistake that makes you ineligible to win e.g. forgetting to repair your flowers or forgetting to get a bonus tile when you gong – you are 相公 or a “mahjong eunuch” for that game. 

  • Even if you participated in all 8 events, it doesn't guarantee that you'll make it to the top 4.

    However many events you can play, may the winds be ever in your favor 🀄️. 

    • As a member, you'll have 8 opportunities to play and rack up points.

    • Everyone starts with 1,000 points. 

    • We will post the ladder on our website and IG after each event. 

    • After the final tournament, the top 4 players on the ladder will win prizes.

  • The LA Mahjong League is here to celebrate and uplift our local AAPI community and our prizes do just that by supporting the Asian-American economy.

    We call it a 胡-胡-胡 (win-win-win)!
